The 390 Nm Blue Whale NE2.0T keeps its output at altitude far better than the 1.5T, and the Aisin 8-speed torque-converter automatic is the gearbox our Andean, Ethiopian and Central Asian dealers ask for by name because it shrugs off crawling traffic and long gravel climbs that heat a dual-clutch. Is the UNI-T 2.0T worth the premium over the 1.5T?
- Only if the duty cycle justifies the gearbox. It is the dearer of the two. Above roughly 2,000 m of altitude, in sustained Gulf-summer stop-start traffic, or on long gravel climbs, the Aisin 8-speed torque-converter automatic is materially more durable than a dual-clutch and the 390 Nm holds up where a small turbo fades. On flat urban roads at sea level the 1.5T does the same job for less money and 0.9 L/100 km less fuel.
What fuel consumption should I plan for in a hot climate?
- Roughly 8.2 to 8.5 L/100 km against the 7.4 L/100 km WLTC figure. Homologation cycles are measured at moderate ambient temperature with the air conditioning off; a Gulf or Sahel summer with the climate control at full load costs 10 to 15 percent. Highway cruising at a steady 100 km/h comes in below the quoted number.
Does the 2.0T need premium fuel?
- It is specified for 95 RON. Markets where 91 or 92 RON is the highest grade widely available should expect the knock sensor to retard ignition timing, which costs power and fuel economy but does not damage the engine. Tell us the fuel grade at enquiry stage and we will confirm the current factory position for your market rather than guess.
