There is no legitimate conversion route to a right-hand-drive Chinese car. Steering conversion moves the steering rack, pedal box, wiring loom, airbag deployment geometry and brake servo, and no inspection regime in East Africa, Southern Africa or ASEAN accepts the result on a new vehicle. Factory RHD or nothing.
Where Changan builds right-hand drive
Changan committed to a manufacturing plant in Rayong, Thailand as its nominated global base for right-hand-drive production, serving Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and South Africa. RHD allocation for any Changan model therefore runs against the Rayong schedule rather than against Chongqing stock, and lead times reflect that.
“Changan Thailand plant will be its major overseas manufacturing base, to build all global RHD models.”
What a right-hand-drive market checks
- Steering position and pedal geometry against the declared type approval.
- Headlamp beam pattern. A left-hand-drive headlamp throws its kick toward the wrong verge and dazzles oncoming traffic; this alone fails a converted car.
- Wiper sweep pattern and washer coverage on the driver side.
- Speedometer primary units — km/h for East Africa, mph primary for the UK.
- Airbag and steering-column crash certification matching the as-built configuration, not the donor configuration.
What we tell RHD buyers
If your market is Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, South Africa, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia or the UK, ask us for the Rayong allocation list and we will tell you honestly what is available and when. If someone quotes you a Chongqing-built right-hand-drive UNI-T today, ask for the VIN and the type-approval number before you pay anything.
